Marketing holds key to pricing of cotton
Cotton producers control prices they receive for their 1978 crop through orderly marketing. Dr. Carl Anderson of Texas A&M Extension Service says marketing practices shape price levels, with December January sales common in Texas. Holding back cotton can bolster prices while weak domestic demand risks price drops if marketings bunch. For 1979, Anderson notes a larger expected crop and possible prices near the CCC loan rate of 50.23 cents per pound, suggesting forward contracting or hedging to secure profit.
