Texans cast ballots in what may be a record turnout as the presidential contest draws the most attention. Voters also choose a U S senator governor and other state offices along with 15 U S House members and 14 proposed constitutional amendments. The race pits Republican Nixon against Democrat McGovern with local campaigns energized by a surge of younger voters in the state.
Election day opened cool and clear in Pecos with an overnight low of 39 after a 76 degree high. Elsewhere heavy rain and thunderstorms drenched much of the central U.S. with flash flood warnings across Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Tennessee and Missouri. Tornado funnels were sighted near Clarksville Texas and Arcola Mississippi, hail fell near Sulphur Springs, and rainfall totals neared 4 inches northeast of Houston. Weather calm returned by dawn in most of Texas as voters went to the polls. officials estimated up to 5.5 million registered and 3.7 million may vote, with ticket splitting expected.
Toyah Lions Club has collected $35 toward an Oscar Lara Scholarship Fund for a Toyah High School senior in a trade school. Lara was a Toyah High School sophomore fatally injured during football practice on Sept. 11.
Mrs. Barbara Fuentez, a 70 year old widow, will receive a furnished used trailer and groceries funded by Pecos neighbors. Police say funds cover the trailer and some extra for groceries.
Voting proceeded quickly at Pecos polling sites with reported variations in early turnout. By 11 a m Box 1 in the courthouse counted 78 ballots, East Pecos Junior High 106, Pecos Elementary 154, with Box 10 in Precinct 3 at 151 and Box 3 at the high school showing strong turnout by evening. Some voters were turned away before 8 a m amid confusion about 7 a m openings for larger towns and 14 constitutional amendments on the ballot.
Voters across the nation cast ballots despite storms as Richard Nixon and George McGovern fought for the presidency. Nixon led in Gallup and early results from Dixville Notch favored him, while McGovern urged victory despite adversity.
Bonn cabinet backs historic pact to normalize relations with East Germany after two years of talks. Erich Honecker signals welcome, draft ready since Monday, Egon Bahr authorized to initial with East German negotiator Michael Kohl. Danish Foreign involvement noted.
Parents of kindergarten to second grade are invited to watch Cable TV channel 12 at 6 30 p m today for the educational program Carsascolindas to be used as an English Spanish language class in Pecos Barstow schools. Anyone with cable can view this sample series to be carried on Channel 12 as a special school service.
Pecos Nursing Home will send Administrator Lois McCain and Mrs. Preston Gray to the 22nd annual Texas Nursing Home Association convention November 8 to 10 at the Sherman Dallas Hotel in Dallas. The event draws over 1,000 nursing home owners and professionals.
Mayor E. W. Schmidt declares November 5 to 11 as Pecos Eagle Week to honor the Pecos school system athletic program and the Pecos High School football team. The proclamation cites the team's outstanding record and notes the week is set aside to recognize their achievements.
Dixville Notch New Hampshire recorded a 16 to 3 Nixon victory in its midnight ballot, continuing a tradition since 1960. Nine voters cast ballots in separate booths and the tally concluded about 25 minutes later amid nearby state and local contests.
President Nixon and Pat Nixon were first in line at Concordia Elementary School in San Clemente for the California election. They voted on 22 state propositions including capital punishment and marijuana legalization, then greeted a student as they left for the Western White House.
State Representative Maurice Angly of Austin spoke at an airport rally in Pe cos and visited Brenham San Antonio Corpus Christi San Angelo and El Paso before ending his bid in Big Spring at 11 20 p m He urged reform minded Democrats to split votes to win the state treasurer race citing the Sharpstown bank loss as evidence and urged honest management of the treasury.
