North Vietnam's chief delegate Xuan Thuy told reporters at the start of the sixth weekly session of the Paris peace talks that without a date for total and unconditional U S withdrawal from South Vietnam no progress could be made. He did not threaten to break off the talks.
Jeretha Collier, an 18 year old Drew High School honor graduate, was shot on a city street. Three white youths are jailed on murder charges as rock throwing incidents flare in Sunflower County. Mississippi NAACP leader Aaron Henry telegraphed President Nixon, urging federal help to curb violence linked to a NAACP voter registration drive.
President Nixon, in a buoyant mood after the so called winter of his discontent, pushes a 1972 campaign plan centered on foreign policy. His travel success in Mobile and Birmingham suggests more White and Black audience appeal and possible more road trips.
Police hunt bandits after a false bomb threat to Qantas caused the airline to surrender $560,000 in two blue suitcases in Sydney. Serial numbers of the ransom notes circulated and an artist’s drawing of the money picker circulated as investigators pursued leads. Rewards totaling 56400 were offered nationwide for the capture of the culprits.
The U S Command reported 38 American deaths in Indochina combat last week the highest total in three weeks. It did not include all 30 killed in three North Vietnamese shellings last Friday as reporting delays left some omitted from the week’s tally. The rest will be added in this week's total announced next Thursday.
Kirksey McCord Nix Jr. 28, a reputed Dixie Mafia boss and son of an Oklahoma judge, pleaded innocent in New Orleans to violating a federal firearms law by falsely stating he had no felony conviction when purchasing a gun. He had previously pleaded innocent to state murder charges and contends he was brought to New Orleans from Dallas illegally as head of a seven state crime operation.
The Associated Press reports severe weather across the Southern Plains into the Mississippi Valley with hail, heavy rain and tornado-like winds. Northeast Oklahoma saw 80 mph gusts. Tulsa areas reported shattered windows and downed power lines but no serious injuries.
Rev. Leslie Smith of First Baptist Church will preach to the 197] graduating class at 8 Sunday night in the Pecos High School auditorium. Becky Rogers will play the processional and recessional as the invocation is given by Rev. Romeo Reyes of East Eighth Street Baptist Church. The choir and congregation participate.
The Hi Junior League opens Saturday with a 7 p.m. double header. Rev Milton Propp will read scriptures, Sally Meek will sing, and the choir will lead the Doxology after the sermon. Father Erwin Lasser will give benediction. Graduation exercises for about 198 seniors occur Tuesday night June 1 at 8 p.m.
A fund has been started for Jimmy Hagar at the First National Bank to accept contributions. Jimmy has returned home from Lubbock and is in serious condition. For more information call Billie Kilcrease at 445 3526.
The Tourist and Convention Committee of the Pecos Chamber of Commerce will meet Friday night at 8 p.m. in the Chamber of Commerce office. John T. Rediger, chairman, urges all members to be present.
The Pecos-Barstow district asks residents to vote for a $1.25 million bond to build vocational education and shop facilities with no tax increase. It notes $19 million added value from oil and gas covers costs, stressing the plan aids local youth whether entering workforce or college. Voters urged to go to four polling places and vote for the youth.
Pecos area summer jobseekers may total about 500 as the Texas Employment Commission in Pecos pledges full help. Office manager Joe Carpenter says the down economy won’t deter outreach to employers and youths, stressing long term benefits of work and collaboration with local groups.
An editor notes Pecos civic leaders urge full citizen cooperation to beautify the town. Polling places for the 1.25 million school bond election are the Community Center Pecos Barstow Orla and Saragosa Schoolhouse. The bond funds new classrooms and shop facilities plus labs and trades spaces to relieve enrollments and may make Pecos Vocational School a regional option.
Paul Parker arrives to serve as summer Associate Minister at First Christian Church assisting Rev. Clark Ford and focusing on youth outreach. A junior at Texas Christian University Parker plans to pursue the ministry. his father serves at a Rowlett church. He resides at 602 North Cedar Street in a rent house of Mrs. Bessent.
The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $13,095 contract to Rowco Inc of San Antonio to eradicate 1,500 acres of salt cedar along the Pecos River in Reeves and Loving Counties as part of the Pecos River water salvage project in West Texas and New Mexico.
The Madera Valley Water Supply Corp awarded to McCracken Construction Co of El Paso a $238,892.27 loan funded project to lay 83 miles of water line and serve about 135 rural families. Work to begin by June and finish in 96 working days, improving drinking water supplies.
The Sheriffettes sponsor a teenage dance tomorrow night from 8 to 12 at the Reeves County Sheriff's Posse Barn. Music by Tommy Hooker and his Cheyenne Social Club. Admission is 1.50 per person. Only teenagers admitted per Mrs A B Nail president.
Rev. David L. Northcutt is called to lead the First Presbyterian Church of Pecos and will start duties June 1 with services June 6. He previously led Coahoma’s First Presbyterian Church for three years and has a background in sociology and theology plus active civic involvement.
