Energy bill shows inching progress after months of stalemate
Congressional staff aides say momentum may emerge on President Carter’s energy program with conferees near a compromise on natural gas pricing. House negotiators claim 13 firm votes in support as Senate leaders anticipate a 10 to 7 margin. If approved, the deal would end the logjam and set gas price controls to lift on January 1, 1985 with interim rate hikes. Further tax provisions and disputes remain to be resolved by staff and within the conference.
