Health hazards from improper cross connections in water system
Health officials warn that improper connections between city water and private supplies can cause back siphoning of nonpotable water. A surveillance program targets facilities like hospitals and mortuaries to prevent cross connections and contamination. Temporary pressure drops during fires or hydrant use can draw contaminants into the potble water, and private wells may introduce untreated water into the municipal system. The latest Texas Health Resources test shows no coliforms in Pecos water as of May, and efforts continue to require back flow prevention devices.
