U S military officials report only about one eighth of the supplies sent through the Ho Chi Minh trail reached South Vietnam and Cambodia during the recent six month dry season. The total passed was roughly 7500 tons, about 18500 tons shy of need, the lowest in years.
Bonn officials warn that a unilateral American force withdrawal from Europe could jeopardize West Germany’s détente with the Soviet bloc. They argue that sustained U S military presence keeps Moscow open to negotiations and Bonn’s peace efforts intact.
Louis Niggeman, president of Fireman's Fund American Insurance Companies, told 400 Texas agents that adopting a no fault system could cut auto insurance premiums by 15 to 25 percent. He urged industry influence with state legislators, calling the current system inadequate and wasteful.
Washington officials report the U S balance of payments deficit rose to a record 5 5 billion on the official reserve transactions basis in the first quarter Commerce Department data show the figure reflects a widening deficit in early year trade accounts and financial flows.
The State Department says the post office passport test program is highly successful and extends nationwide. It began last July in Detroit Houston Midland CT cities and eight Connecticut towns. Expansion includes seven Massachusetts cities now and 61 more cities in MA NY CA and MN by mid June.
Trade between Mexico and Canada shows an upward trend in imports and exports after falling from 68.4 million in 1964 to 38.5 million in 1968. In 1968 the level began to rise and reached 55.8 million, with 1970 first three quarters totaling 43.1 million.
Washington reports the USDA will send a representative to Canada to verify if rising Canadian meat exports to the United States include third country beef from Australia and New Zealand. U S customs cracked down last year on such imports, and US officials fear Canada may resume the practice.
The dedication of the Lyndon B. Johnson Library will be broadcast nationally on NBC and CBS. The live program from 11 30 a m to 12 00 p m CDT will be carried via WFAA TV Dallas in an agreement with the Dallas station and library officials.

Rosary will be recited tonight at Pecos Funeral Home Chapel for Agapito Sisneros Nunez 65 who died yesterday at Memorial Hospital. Funeral Mass at Santa Rosa Catholic Church tomorrow morning at 10 with burial in Santa Rosa Cemetery. Nunez a 40 year Pecos resident was born Oct 5 1905 in Mexico and worked as a truck driver. Surviving widow Este fana two sons Jessie and Raymond both of Pecos two daughters Elisia T Bejanano of Pecos and Betty Ramirez of Las Cruces NM 15 grandchildren a brother Luis of Mexico and a sister Isabel Orona of Mexico
Voters in about half of Texas will decide today on public sale of liquor by the drink in 47 counties and on four proposed constitutional amendments. Turnout is expected around 1.2 million to 1.5 million with growth from urban interest. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Government offices are asked to allow two hours off to vote.
The High Junior League kicks off May 29 in Monahans with two Pecos teams and three Monahans teams. Practice starts May 21 at 6 p.m. at the high school field. C. W. Spray leads the league as president, with Jack Robison as vice president and Russell Johnson as secretary treasurer. The Gray team is led by James Thomasson and includes Wade McLain, Chris Spray, Rudy Mendoza, and others. The Red Team is coached by Ken Jones and managed by Larry Parker, with players such as Kyle Johnson, Mickey Marquez, Juan Sandoval, Ricky Sandell, Clifton Glenn, and more. A coach is sought for the Gray squad.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce Tourist and Convention Committee plans a beard growing contest during the Pecos Rodeo from June 20 to July 3. Jonna T. Rediger chairs the event with two classes full and shaped beards. Entries due by June 1 with a $2 fee. Prizes include $25 first and $15 second in each division. Local barbers will judge.
Wesley Hart retires from long postal career after 36 years at the post office and 28 years as assistant postmaster. Born Sept. 12, 1911 in Pecos, he excelled at Pecos High School and attended Texas Christian University on a scholarship. He married Marianne Kingsbury in 1938 and raised three children while active in church, civic groups, and Little League coaching.
Executive Director Samuel L. Price and assistant Raul de los Santos of the War on Poverty program were charged with simple assault after a scuffle with representative Russell Hayes. Price required seven stitches for a lip injury and de los Santos had skull X-rays after the incident in Houston.
The Reeves County Community Council advisory body re elected Rev A Olmos and Frank Shorter along with Mrs Lon Bailey to the Main Board. Bernardo Martinez Rosa Granado and Rev W A Skillern were newly elected to the Board. John Martinez discussed Adult Basic Education and GED testing at Pecos programs.
C J Ryan is in serious condition after an oil well accident near Toyah yesterday morning. He was welding a collar on a pipe when pressure blew him from the hole, tearing clothing and embedding steel fragments in his body.
