The Pecos school district board announced a slate of 158 tax suits in progress as part of a tougher policy toward delinquent taxpayers. The drive follows a Thursday night meeting where a three member panel described the filing process and goals.
In Pecos a Mother’s Day corsage offer prompts nominations by 5 p.m. at the Enterprise office. The town also hosts a two day Pecos High School production Plenty of Money and reports on school board actions including tax suits, bus routes, and budget needs. Community crusade events and church participation are outlined with volunteer roles and transportation plans.
George Young minister of music youth and education for First Baptist Church entered Odessa Medical Center Hospital Thursday night for tests and possible back surgery. He is in Room 613.
In Kellogg Idaho Ron Flory 28 and Tom Wilkinson 29 are among the 93 miners trapped by fire at the Sunshine mine on May 2. Flory accepts Gov Cecil Andrus offer to relocate and be retrained while Wilkinson plans to remain a miner. The death toll rises as 44 bodies are recovered in a 24 hour span bringing total to 91 with 108 escapees from the original 201 workers. Despair and desolation spread through Kellogg as seven last bodies are found and families seek comfort.
A cloudburst in Central Texas caused widespread flooding. Eight people died, 20 to 25 were unaccounted for, and up to 3,000 fled homes as floodwaters rose. National Guard personnel were deployed to curb looting in New Braunfels and Seguin.
Dick Morelan owner of Pecos Air Conditioning Co met with Reeves County Commissioners this morning submitting a performance bond and plans for air conditioning and heating installation at the courthouse. Commissioners approved the plans and Morelan said work will begin Monday with a 60 day completion goal. Hurt Inc of Odessa will plant trees and shrubs starting Monday with completion by Thursday. The group discussed county road and bridge work and the appointment of a new juvenile officer to replace retiring J E Couch May 31. County Judge Darrell Glover presided at the called meeting attended by all four commissioners Carrasco Cothrun Eisenwine Faulkner, County Clerk Estelle Clinton and Auditor Marguerite Kent.
The East Pecos Junior High School band represents Pecos at the Sanderson May Music Festival this Saturday. Darrell Carr says no other Pecos band competes, his group won first last year. They will face teams from Sanderson, Comstock, Alpine, McCamey, Iraan and Fort Stockton.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce orders ten additional Christmas light decorations for next season. Director Paul Randolph says the starter set will be expanded to cover a larger area, using the same design on the same streets, funded by the Chamber.
Ben Matta of 2100 S Plum presented with a gavel as outgoing South Pecos Elementary PTA president after two years of service. Incoming officers are A D Woody president Mrs Don Weinacht VP Janet Pattillo secretary Mrs Ronnie Bowles treasurer and Mrs Roy Precht program chairman. Installation May 22 at A D Woody’s home.
The Richard Briscoe Post 91 of the American Legion will hold its regular meeting on Monday May 15 at 8 p.m. at Ninth and Cedar Streets. All veterans urged to attend. John Curcurato Sr. is commander of the post.
A multi day Pecos Crusade schedule lists daily events from Sunday through Friday at the stadium. Included are dedication services led by Evangelist Gil Stricklin, youth events, choirs, counselor meetings, school assemblies, magician acts, music festivals, sacred concerts, and special guest appearances. The plan features meals, neighborhood nights, and a Friday national anthem with an Armed Forces Color Guard.
