Two Men Rescued from Depths of Silver Mine
Ron Flory and Tom Wilkenson survived a 175 hour entrapment in the Sun Shine silver mine near Kellogg Idaho. Rescue teams continued to search for more than 40 missing miners as the death toll rose to 47. The two men were found exhausted but in good health after living on air and water from mine piping and food from coworkers’ lunch buckets.

Pecos Lions win second in district convention
The Pecos Evening Lions Club earned second place at the Lion's District 2T3 convention in El Paso. They logged 11 new members, funded glasses for needy children, repaired 19 hearing aids, financed ear surgery for two children, hosted a free hearing clinic, bought hospital clothing, sent a child to Kerrville camp, and planned to build the Pecos Pony League outfield fence. Only El Paso clubs and Odessa Downtown matched enough points in a 63 club district. Leader Dan Schaefer credits Pecos residents for fundraising success and says funds remain tight as they prepare to solicit more in the near future.

Lions Clinic Finds Hearing Defects in Children and Adults
At the Pecos Evening Lions Club free hearing clinic 31 children and 14 adults were found with hearing defects. Ten children had tongue thrust or articulation problems, eight were referred for treatment, and more than 300 preschools were tested for defects tied to retardation, cleft palates, and stuttering. Three cases of amblyopia were detected and referred for glasses.
