Reeves County Commissioners authorized Marcos Martinez to draft a proposal for a Toyah swimming pool with an estimated cost around 20000 dollars. Mayor Mark Chaddick said the project would benefit about 35 to 40 children and noted a 24 by 44 foot pool plus amenities could cost 17000 with 3000 more for restrooms. The pool would be financed with revenue sharing funds and maintenance would fall to the city.
Police in Houston arrested fifteen people including two juveniles after looting gunfire and fires erupted in Moody Park following a fiesta attended by about 1,500. A police car and a television van were burned, while a officer suffered a broken leg and two TV crew members were hurt. The unrest connects to a yearlong dispute over the death of Joe Campos Torres in police custody.
In Reeves County the Raza Unida results showed 52 for Diaz DeLeon in the U.S. Senate race and 44 for Compean for governor while local officials Orona and Orona led county posts with 66 and 55 votes. The article also notes postoutbreak looting, police response, and comments on justice and the Torres case, set against Pecos weather and a forecast for West Texas.
Hill, 54, avoided a runoff in a five candidate Democratic primary, securing 51.26 percent of the vote to Briscoe's 41.66 percent. With 824,845 votes for Hill, 670,424 for Briscoe, and 83,895 for Smith, the remaining ballots would only widen Hill's margin. Bill Clements won the Republican primary over Ray Hutson. Bob Krueger won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. Tower was unopposed in the Republican primary.
Incumbent Railroad Commissioner John Poerner and former commissioner Jerry Sadler quickly urged voters to choose wisely for the unexpired term on June 3.
