Social Security deficits projected rise, trustees warn
The four Social Security trust funds forecast short-range and long-range deficits higher than prior estimates. The Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance program will pay out more than payroll tax income this year, with a deficit near 3 billion dollars and reserves exhausted by 1981. Over 75 years the average annual deficit is seen at about 5.3 percent, driven by inflation, benefit boosts, unemployment and a shrinking birth rate. Trustees say future work force must support more beneficiaries, warning a 2030 ratio of 100 workers per 50 beneficiaries.
