Garment maker Alvin Duskin leads a petition drive claiming high rise offices ruin cities. He reports 50 000 signatures collected and 1 100 volunteers canvassed over 10 weeks toward the 24 800 needed for a June ballot in a special election. Duskin says the effort signals a historic turn away from what he calls mindless development.
Washington AP reports hog prices fell last month with mid March averages at 16.90 per hundredweight, down from 25.60 a year earlier. January price was 15.20, then rose to 19.20 by mid February as production and marketing adjustments weighed on the market.
Senator Strom Thurmond and his wife Nancy welcomed a daughter born Tuesday afternoon at Greenwood hospital. The baby weighed 7 pounds and doctors reported mother and child were doing fine. The senator said he was not very nervous and added they may have more children.
Cardinal Michael Browne an Irish Dominican and first non bishop Irish cardinal died after a long illness in Vatican City at age 83. He served eight years in the Curia and was elevated to the College of Cardinals by John XXIII in 1962 and retired earlier this year under Pope Paul VI's rule for prelates over 80. His death leaves 123 cardinals.
FBI examines fingerprints of a bearded young man shot dead in a sleeping bag beside an Interstate 10 access road in Junction Texas. Sheriff Rip Martin says the victim, aged 20 to 25, with hazel eyes, wore underwear and may have owned a small car possibly taken by the killer.

Fire swept the upper floors of a five story brick building in Boston early today. Four people died and 12 were injured in the blaze of suspected origin, with others missing. Lt. Final rites were held for Hugo Martinez Munoz, one-day old son of Mr and Mrs Ramon Munoz of Verhalen. Services took place at Santa Rosa Catholic Church with burial in Santa Rosa Cemetery. The infant was born March 29 at Memorial Hospital. Surviving are two brothers Arturo and Noah and grandparents Soledad Munoz and Manuela Martinez Villa of Old Mexico.
