In Freetown the army moves to halt Brig. John Bangurah's bid for power as Lt. Col. Sam King announces that most of Sierra Leone's 1500-strong forces have dissociated and will keep Prime Minister Siaka P. Stevens in office.
A Texas group asks the Agriculture Department to require goat meat labels read mu ton or chevon instead of goat meat. Officials say chevon is a Spanish term for goat meat and argue consumers understand the terms.
Pemex Director Antonio Dovali Jaime announced a goal to eliminate petrochemical imports for synthetic fibers by 1975 while presenting a fiscal 1971 budget near 1.9 billion dollars. President Echeverria opened a 15.2 million Veracruz plant for synthetic fiber components amid 37 new works costing 81.52 million dollars. Meanwhile Lt. Calley’s My Lai murder trial jurors sought another read-back as deliberations enter the eighth day.
The House Ways and Means Committee moves toward a decision on legislation to relieve states of much welfare costs and adapt a version of the Nixon family assistance plan. The amount of aid for needy families remains undecided after weeks of closed door talks.
A missing bicycle was found and returned after a boy spotted a bike matching the description and alerted the mother of the owner. The device was recovered by the girl’s mother after a neighbor’s tip led to the discovery.
Arrangements are pending at Pecos Funeral Home for Manuel Mora who died yesterday in Kermit hospital. Mora was transferred to Kermit last week from Pecos Hospital.
The Pecos Queens lose to Kermit with a three game set in Pecos High gym. B team wins 14-8 and 15-13 while varsity drops 15-4 8-6 and 14-10. Standouts include Brenda Moore Janice Williams Linda Jenkins Kathy Wadley Kim Blackwell. Queens travel to Andrews Friday at 6 30.
Pecos High School hosts its third annual science fair March 19 and 20 with 137 projects. William Kaddatz leads as student director, judges include engineers Richard Varela and Robert Hensen, and many students win senior and junior division awards across math physics biology and biology honorable mentions.
The Moody Planetarium at Texas Tech re opens 2 p.m. Sunday lectures and adds 2 p.m. Saturdays with 2 and 3 p.m. Sundays. Admission is 50 cents adults 25 cents for children free for West Texas Museum Association members. Tech students pay 25 cents with LD card. Preschoolers not admitted.
The Texas House approved continuing Daylight Saving Time amid citizen letters protesting the time change. A Reeves County poll showed 97 percent disliking the change. Civil jury week opens April 5 with a long list of named prospective jurors. A Thursday Bible study at the Community Center Banquet Room is open to the public. Weather forecast for Southwest Texas west of the Pecos calls for clear to partly cloudy skies, windy tonight, with a low around 34 and high near 84 Thursday.
Memorial Hospital adds RCA color free set service in most patient rooms with a new cable system installed by Continental Transmission Corp. Patients can select channels 2 4 7 6 and use remote controls to adjust volume without disturbing others. The hospital plans more electric beds funded by the auxiliary to enhance patient care.
