Tax cuts eyed on Social Security hike by committee

Democrats on the Joint Economic Committee urged a 33 billion dollar cut in the forthcoming Social Security tax increase and backed Fed easing to offset higher rates. They proposed shifting disability and Medicare costs to general taxes to fund a 25 billion dollar income tax cut and meet budget goals. Republicans disagreed on methods but urged moderating the tax rise to shield middle incomes. They urged annual tax code reviews and depreciation deductions tied to current costs to spur jobs and after tax wages. The panel also backed Humphrey Hawkins full employment goal and House passage of the bill.

The Brownsville district attorney’s office had Galvan brought to South Texas before learning of a double jeopardy provision in the treaty. Assistant DA Joe Hendley said he hadn’t read the treaty, noting the clause bars retrial in the prisoner’s home country for the same charges.
