United Airlines mechanics strike deal after all-night talks
United Airlines and its machinists union reached a tentative contract after an all-night bargaining session in Washington. The pact follows a pattern similar to a October Trans World Airlines settlement offering about a 30 percent raise over three years plus cost-of-living adjustments, though United workers had previously rejected a similar tentative deal. The IAM had threatened a Friday midnight strike but agreed to resume talks at Labor Secretary Ray Marshall's urging.
