Air rivers cause unusual snow in the South this winter

Government meteorologists say two powerful jet streams diverted unusually, bringing snow to the South while cooler regions farther north saw milder temperatures. The polar jet and a rare subtropical jet both shifted, altering storm tracks across the hemisphere. Dr. Murray Mitchell notes the subtropical jet moved north to the Gulf of Mexico and intensified, while the polar jet also veered off its normal course.

Oil unitization bill clears House subcommittee

A House Natural Resources subcommittee voted 4-2 for a proposed oil unitization bill advancing to the full committee. The measure would let the Texas Railroad Commission issue unitization orders with 75 percent owner approval, replacing the current 100 percent standard. Exxon’s Forrest Hoglund argued the change unlocks oil recovery, while questions arose about lands not held by private owners.

Beef demand dip may not dent high beef prices

Government and industry spokesmen say a sharp drop in consumer beef demand could be brief and not affect wholesale prices. A National Association of Food Chains survey found 15 of 16 chains ordering less beef last week, mostly 3 to 4 percent, while wholesale slaughter and feeder inventories showed gains or steady rises in cattle in several states. Economic data indicate rising wholesale prices and strong feeder rates as buyers push cattle to market.
