Toyah voters backed on premises consumption and mixed drinks by 50 to 18 in a local option election. The result ends Toyah’s dry era since 1941 and makes it the last Reeves County stronghold to permit tavern sale of beer and mixed drinks. County Judge H D Glover cited strong turnout and a petition drive that prompted the vote.
Mayor Bill Pigman designated March 7 13 as Girl Scout Week to mark the 64th anniversary of the Girl Scouts in the United States. He praised the organization for growth from 18 Girls in 1912 to 3.2 million members and volunteers worldwide. Attendees included Scouts Nidia Flores Melissa Gholson Mary Teal Gloria Teal April Faulkner Cathy Daniels Jamie Villanueva and adults Laura Teal Barbara Flores Betty Daniels Linda Faulkner Linda Thompson.
Richard Holden a British born American limey and Nigerian exile arrives in Pecos for a three week service tour with Goss Press Co. He describes 32 years in press engineering across Europe Asia and Africa and recalls work from Nigeria to Northern Ireland and Moscow.
Pecos attorney John Tomlin has been named to represent Reeves County in condemnation proceedings over land needed for a farm to market road project. The move was approved in today’s county commissioners court session.
Odessa Ector Eagles earned the state AAA basketball crown with a 78-75 victory over Waxahachie to seal the title after a season that included district, bi district, and regional championships and marked their second state crown since 1972.
Treasury Secretary William Simon urged Egypt to streamline foreign exchange and secure peace to attract large U.S. investment. He cited a potential $50 million to $100 million project as a signal of progress after talks with President Anwar Sadat. Sadat urged Washington to help with debt, deficits, and investment to revive key industries.
Texas Panhandle and South Plains saw snowfall while other drought areas received rain. Edmonson and Plainview reported several inches of snow as temperatures hovered around the 50s and 30s. Officials warned of slick roads and resumed service efforts after a waterlogged telephone line. The National Weather Service forecast gradual end to the wet spell as a frontal system moved northeast.
