Bilingual School Signals Cautious Success in Denver
In Denver Elmwood School three teachers foster Mexican American pride through a bilingual program for kindergarteners and first graders funded by federal dollars. Educators note past shame around language and culture, while parents like Isabell Castellano laud renewed motivation and outlook as Freddy Castellano shows openness to sharing home life. The program, part of a 1968 act with 25 million yearly nationwide spending, aims to raise long term educational attainment among Mexican Americans.
