ECOS plans a large rodeo with bigger entry fields and lively night shows to attract more attendees than previous years. Evening entertainment, reasonable prices, and free dances aim to make the event a record breaker for Pecos residents despite the heat at the rodeo ground.
Mervin Sport Whalen exits after fifteen months with the Enterprise staff to join Bell Telephone Company magazine's advertising division. Whalen is praised as aggressive and talented, with strong prospects ahead, and many Pecos friends extend well wishes.
The opening date of the Pecos radio station KIUN is delayed due to RCA Manufacturing Co failing to deliver the transmitter. Installation of the ground system and wiring in the studio and transmitter room is underway, but a definite date cannot be set this week.
Drillers prepared for a second shot at the Eppenauer No 2 Hamill and Ellis well in Loving county after oil was encountered at 4225 feet. The first shot on Tuesday caused the well to bridge, prompting the second shot. Nearby Mason Oil Co. reported wildcat activity in northern Loving county, with a drill to 2540 feet in the northwest quarter of section 22.
Construction of the water line to the City soft water wells south of Pecos is under way this week. J. & Morgan and Co. of El Paso lead the project with Pecos men employed on the site. Finishing touches are being added to the town water mains extension.
Congratulations go to Mr and Mrs O L Whaley on the arrival of a fine baby girl Juanita born June 19. Mother and child are reported doing well.
A miniature cyclone swept Barstow Wednesday evening, unroofing Sewell's Dry Goods Store and lifting a farm house from its foundation. Hail accompanied the storm, causing damage to dry goods, homes, and crops around Barstow and nearby Pecos with several structures reported damaged.
The sixth Pecos Rodeo returns with a new exclusive grounds near the Fort Stockton road and adds night rodeo and a queen contest. Events run Wednesday and Thursday with parades, 2.45 pm and 8.15 pm showtimes, plus baseball games, free street dances, and an expected 8 000 to 10 000 attendees. Fenton Alley is rodeo manager and registration is at the Texas Recreation Club.
Fancher Bell, former editor of a Clinton Ohio paper, has bought the Taft newspaper in Taft Texas. The Bell family moves into the cotton belt town, and friends wish them success in their new venture.
Clinton Emery, formerly a district salesman for the Texas Company in this territory, died early this week at Palestine, Texas. He resided here for several years and made many friends who regret his death. no further details could be learned.
Finishing touches to the steel work at the new Federal building were underway this week and some concrete work had been completed.
B R Hammond formerly owner of Home Furniture Co now in Los Angeles was visiting when he overturned his car near Pecos. The vehicle was damaged but Hammond escaped uninjured.
Bud Spillsbury and his trained horse Nuisance will make a return appearance at all rodeo performances after a standout last year. The duo is expected to draw large crowds and rekindle the memorable act.
Johnnie P. North Jr., 9, of Pyote, died after burns suffered while using gasoline to remove insulation from copper wire. He was rushed to Pecos for treatment but died about 24 hours later. Funeral services were held in Pyote with Pecos Furniture Co. in charge.
Anniversary Week at the Grand extends July 7 through 15 with a headline bill of entertainment. Wallace Beery stars in West Point the Air on Sunday and Monday as the debut program. Ladies receive Beery star gifts, and a grand finale Saturday night features a bedroom suite giveaway with Home Furniture Co. Prices are reduced and free gifts offered at both theaters.
Former Enterprise editor Pat Moran, now head of the Sanderson Times, spent several hours Thursday night in Sanderson visiting friends and relatives.
Preliminary WPA principles outline how projects will be selected and sponsored by county relief offices until local WPA offices are set up. Eligible sponsors include states counties villages and townships. Unofficial groups cannot sponsor but may cooperate. Priorities emphasize usefulness wage generation, quick spending, and moving relief workers into private employment.
The Pecos All-Star softball team was chosen by ballot with ten players listed by position. Fireboys dominate the first team with four selections including Lybrand at two positions. Wadleys, Conoco, Mennie and Mercantile-Telephone each place once. The squad will meet Carlsbad, Wink, and Midland in upcoming games.
The Longhorn camp of the Royal Neighbors of America will stage a drill on Pecos streets just before the Thursday night street dance on July 4. Drill Captain Miss Myrtle Cowan will direct the activity.
KIUN will broadcast rodeo happenings including events and riders at all performances next week. Burton Boatright and Marvin Ferris of KIUN will be announcers relaying information from the rodeo manager and judges using a new 30 watt public address amplifier and microphone.
City Pharmacy in Pecos to give away a pony next Thursday night after the rodeo. Ben Colwell, the store manager, announced the event as part of the July 4th festivities.
The Pecos event runs July 3 and 4 with a Grand Opening Parade at 1:30 p.m. followed by an afternoon rodeo at the rodeo grounds. All-Star baseball at Alkali Park 8:00 p.m. and night rodeo with street dancing. Free to all. Sleepy Time Band of Alpine performs. Second day features grand entry, afternoon show, all-star softball, and evening rodeo with more dancing.
Dr. Ray Kellogg of Sioux City told Pecos Rotary members travel in most of Mexico is safe and the recent Mexico City Rotary convention drew 76 nations. He praised the Pan American highway plans and noted English teaching in public schools to aid future visitors. Retiring president Harry Hinkle received a leather traveling bag as a token of esteem as Dick Tollud became the new president.
Earl Summers, owner of Modern Cleaners, announces the purchase of Helper-Self Laundry facilities. The combined operation will move to the Howard building on the highway east with a new door to Snowhite Creamery. Summers Laundry and Dry Cleaners will offer both commercial and custom laundry services.
Jacks Wills owner of Jack's Oasis invites everyone to watch the rodeo parade next Wednesday announcing a surprise in the parade. He says the crowd should expect something unusual from the event.
O. N. Lloyd of Dallas presented the final report on changed specifications for the Red Bluff dam. The Red Bluff Board of directors and contractors met Thursday, with plans to extend discussions into Friday. Attending were E. B. Barron president, J. E. Couch vice president, J. H. Miler secretary, and directors Goodrich, Snelson, and Butler. About 150 men worked on the dam site this week and the Pecos bridge repaired after the recent flood was back in use.
Mentone tops Merc-Tel Pecos 6 to 5 after a ninth inning rally. Mac Kyle starred with two triples and sharp catches as Mentone pitcher Dardin faced Merc-Tel’s Yel and Baker. Final score by innings shows Mentone 4 runs in the final frame to seal the win.
A group of Pecos youths will depart this weekend to attend the Citizens Military Training Camp at Fort Bliss. The participants are Francis Davis, Joe Bob Kelton, Tom King, Brawley King, Junior Hudson, Ralph Bolin, and Milam Taylor. They will be away for several weeks.
Another prize for the Rodeo Queen at the Pecos show was announced late Thursday. The prize is a complete riding habit donated by Kingston Manufacturing Company through Pecos Mercantile Co.
In 1934 tax exemption certificates must be exchanged for new ones before use on the 1985 cotton crop. Producers are urged to deliver 1934 certificates to the County Agent at once or risk loss of value. They may choose new certificates or place old ones in a pool to be sold to ginners of early cotton.
