Racing plans surge as Man O War, a famed winter book favorite, is trained for the Pecos Jackrabbit Derby. Entries flood in from Abilene and beyond while managers seek to keep training secrets. If victorious, Man O War could enter further meets in Midland or Carlsbad.
Pecos Chamber of Commerce tackled the local housing shortage at a bi weekly luncheon. Local contractors proposed a program to build low cost houses funded by Pecos businessmen and the Pecos Building and Loan Association. Plans foresee four room houses costing about 1500 with a 12 year financing plan. Six luncheon members tentatively joined. six more needed. One block large enough for 12 houses could be bought. construction about 45 days. Secretary Ben Smith noted daily interest from people seeking housing and officials predicted immediate rentals for 40 or 50 homes.
The Delaware sand test in Ward county about 16 miles east of Pecos shows oil and gas in the Kenneth Slack well. Initial flow suggested 2 to 4 million cubic feet gas with 3 000 to 4 000 feet of oil in the hole. The well bottomed at 8 085 feet amid trading and leasing activity.
ECOS and Reeves county launch drives to curb dysentery by targeting unsanitary sites. The City Council hires an additional inspector to work with Clarence Mount, inspecting restaurants and food handling areas and urging cleanliness of outdoor toilets, cess pools, and garbage cans. San Antonio engineer H. St. F. Helland to advise on a disposal plant and sewer upgrades. County health officer George H. Garrett plans a sweep of Pecos businesses to enforce the state sanitary code.
Citizens are urged to comply with sanitary laws patterned after state code. An explanation will be given to business owners on upgrades required for establishments to meet the standard.
Red Bluff officials report the second irrigation period has begun and water need estimates are uncertain. About 47 009 acre feet were used in the first period from March to May 13, leaving 8 000 acre feet in the reservoir, which now holds about 280 000 acre feet near capacity. Cotton is in excellent condition with prospects of one to two bales on many of roughly 18 000 to 19 000 acres. water is expected to meet needs for several years.
Pecos gears up for its eighth annual rodeo and celebration with record entries and a new jackrabbit derby. About 100 contestants expected for over $2,000 in prizes as programs go out to hopeful riders from Fort Worth Mesquite and Throckmorton among others. Buck Jackson reports rising inquiries and girl ropers from the east expected back this week. Bucks Stewart Del Rio clowning and Junior Edwards Sierra Blanca feature, plus rope spinning by Howard Collier Jr. Pecos track ready for the derby.
Buck Jackson Sr general manager of the eighth Pecos Rodeo and Celebration issued a request for corrals to house horses. He asked any person with available corrals to contact him or a member of the Rodeo Committee.
Odessa officials sought a state designated highway to the Kermit oil fields but were told by the State Highway Commission to fund and build it themselves. The commission rejected their $135,000 bond plan and suggested engineers’ guidance for a road from Odessa toward the Winkler county line. Kermit opposed Odessa’s bid as it eyed a Midland route.
The Pecos city board of equalization will meet at City Hall at 10 a m Tuesday July 6 to consider tax renditions and assessments for this year. City Secretary M D Cowan announced this week. Cowan said persons desiring to be heard regarding tax assessments may appear before the board.
County Agent Ted Johnston reports cattle in southern Reeves County are fat and sleek as grassruns tall with plentiful forage. The cows lie down while grazing a sign of abundant pasture during improved conditions after a harsh period.
The First Cavalry Division may hold maneuvers near Pecos in spring 1938. Three army officers Col. Frank Keller Lieut Col. Harry Chamblin and Major A T Lacey will survey possible maneuver areas. A 200000 acre site with water for 5300 men and 3700 animals is sought.

Reeves county property assessments for 1937 will be increased very little County Judge J B Woolfolk said this week The county equalization board has completed its preliminary work and will hold a hearing July 7 to hear taxpayers who oppose assessments fixed by the board.
The third annual roundup picnic of the Southern Union Gas Company will be at the Country Club July 3. Harvey Beauchamp district manager announced this week. About 100 out of town employees are expected. That night the local Gassers meet the Dallas office team in a softball double header at Softball Park. C. H. Zachry vice president and general manager leads the Dallas team and is expected to bring a strong aggregation. The visitors attend the rodeo July 4.
County Agent Ted Johnston urges returning to open range grazing to revive Trans-Pecos lands once lush in 1900. He says dry years and confinement reduce grazing value. open range would allow cattle movement to better pastures and rest tracts. A rancher board would run the project with participation tied to land contributed.
H G Lucas president of the Texas Agricultural Association will speak at the Ward county courthouse Barstow at 8 p m Monday night about the farm program now before Congress. He will discuss the new agricultural program before Congress.
West Texas newspapermen invited to the eighth Pecos Rodeo and Celebration with July 3 designated as Press Day. Chamber secretary Ben Smith announced invitations and passes mailed this week and planned trips to Red Bluff dam and the Davis Mountains among other entertainments for visiting reporters.
Robbers carried out two incidents this week in Pecos. The Zimmer Motor Company lost 203 dollars in cash when a bank book with cash and checks was left unattended during a deposit. A separate break in at Elite case yielded 72 dollars from a cigar box with no fingerprints found. one suspect was released for lack of evidence.
Mrs. H A Wren long time Pecos resident died last Saturday after a short illness. Born in Florida she lived in Loudon Tennessee before moving to Texas and taught in high schools and colleges after earning a Peabody College degree. She married Herschell A Wren in 1899 in Springtown Texas and settled in Pecos in 1907 aside from a four year stay in Canutillo Texas. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery leaving sisters Misses Lillie and Fannie Butler of Loudon Tennessee.
Mr and Mrs E M Biggs welcomed twins on June 7 at a local sanitarium. A boy and a girl are reported healthy and doing nicely. Sheriff Louis Roberson remains in a cast after injuring his ankle when dismounting a horse.
