Oldtimers plan a full day at the West of the Pecos Museum in Pecos on July 1 with 9 a.m. registration and 10:30 a.m. mayoral welcome preceding a parade review from the judge's stand. Prizes for oldest attendee and farthest traveler. event honors 1966 pioneers Manahan and Mahoney.
The Pecos region faces continued clouds and a chance of thundershowers tonight and Friday with temperatures from the upper 70s to over 100. Midland reports cloudy skies and a morning high of 85 as winds shift from east to southeast. Cottonell Mill recorded 104 for a high and 73 for a low on Wednesday. Tornadoes struck near Amarillo, and areas around Lubbock and Childress, as cooler fronts moved through parts of the state. Temperatures elsewhere topped 106 in several places for a second day, with Del Rio at 103, Cotulla 162, and San Angelo 101.
Tropical storm Agnes drifted north along the east coast dumping torrential rains across North Carolina Virginia Maryland Pennsylvania and New York. The disaster left thousands homeless with reports of up to 14 deaths and widespread evacuations as floodwaters swamped roads dams and towns including Occoquan Almond and Laurel.
Edwin C. Grace, 33, a uniformed off duty guard, opened fire in Heritage House in Cherry Hill, killing none and wounding six as he fired about 100 rounds. Police surrounded the building, used tear gas, and carried Grace out for surgery while witnesses described a terrifying attack and orders for victims to stay still.
The Provisional IRA announced a conditional cease-fire in its bomb and bullet campaign to unite Northern Ireland with the Irish republic. The halt would start at midnight next Monday if Britain reciprocates, with no full terms released.
Chicano leaders from the Southwest will convene in Albuquerque to shape a national congress for cultural and land reform. Reies Lopez Tijerina, founder of the alianza, announced the tentative October 2022 congress and said professionals and community leaders from GI Forum and League of Latin American Citizens will attend Saturday’s planning meeting.
Debbie Bryan daughter of Mr and Mrs Jerry Bryan 1916 Jackson St competes for the Golden Girl title with Pecos High School co eds. She will model a Gibson era gown a Western costume and perform a talent number at the Rotary Club Rodeo Revue June 29 at 8 pm in the high school auditorium. She is Beta Sigma Phi sponsored 7 year old coed. She serves as captain of the volleyball team and has three years in the band. She belongs to Tri K Jiniorette Klub and is historical officer secretary and president. She will be escorted by Victor Ashley.
Four Pecos area drivers for Intratex Gas Company were honored at a dinner for accident free driving in 1971. Safer manager Phil Armbrecht led the informal ceremony with executives E. W. Morris Henry J. Haas and Roger R. Wright in attendance. Top award went to Jack F. Thomason for 11 consecutive years without a chargeable accident. Other honorees were Guy Bond and Melvin Adickes with five consecutive years and R. O. Mathews with one year.
Gordon Holiday, Pecos Memorial Hospital administrator, will represent the Pecos area at the Texas Hospital Association annual planning meetings in Austin from today through Saturday. The planning sessions set the THA course of action for the coming year and include officer orientation, THA Board discussions, and approval of council projects. In 1971 the THA convention at Fort Worth drew 6,085 registrants and 301 exhibits at the Tarrant County Convention Center.
