Fire fighters reported gains in controlling a major forest fire in Arizona’s national forests while another blaze remained out of control. The two-day-old Carr fire burned in steep terrain complicating containment efforts and threatening nearby resources.
A new livestock electronic identification system moves from drawing boards to field testing. Advocates say implants read by a handheld interrogator can identify animals, track origin, monitor breeding, and even link to payments, with multiple industry uses explained.
Nairobi based Daily Nation cited sources claiming two gunmen attacked Amin at Bagitabbre near Entebbe while Uganda denies the incident. Kenyan paper quotes Vice President Adrisi stating authorities search nationwide. Officials in Kampala report no official word on Amin's status.
The Supreme Court held 6-3 that states are not required by the Constitution or the Social Security Act to pay for elective abortions when mothers are not in danger. The decision allows states to fund such care if they choose, and also finds no obligation for public hospitals to provide abortions for poor women.
The Space Shuttle Enterprise flew 54 minutes piggyback on a Boeing 747 at Edwards Air Force Base. NASA officials expect ferrying astronauts and cargo to space by 1980 with next manned test on June 28 and possible free flights as early as July 27. Commander Fred Haise said all systems functioned nearly perfectly.
In New Orleans Anita Bryant's weekend visit drew protests from gay rights supporters and opposition groups. Police separated about 1000 marchers chanting anti Bryant slogans while a smaller group Christian supporters waved placards and sang hymns. Bryant spoke at the Summer Pops Festival and told an interviewer she would rather her child be dead than be homosexual.
Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev lands in Paris for his first foreign trip as president. He is greeted by President Giscard d Estaing amid tight security after a bomb threat and a ban on street protests. Trade talks aim to boost Franco Soviet commerce to 1980.
The Supreme Court ruled Texas must obtain federal approval under the Voting Rights Act before altering voting or election procedures. The court also allowed South Carolina to implement a state senate reapportionment plan, a decision criticized in dissent by Justices Marshall and Brennan for disadvantaging Black voters.
A Saturday evening crash on U.S. 290 sixteen miles east of Balmorhea killed 12 year old Sandy Pisarski of Phoenix. Cathy Pisarski 13 suffered serious injuries and was transported to Odessa after initial care in Pecos County Memorial Hospital. Several other injured parties included Barbara Brown 38 Jennifer Pisarski 16 and Angelina Pisarski five months all listed as involved. Investigating troopers Jim Baldwin and David Johnson reported no citations issued.
Western Week highlights include a Tuesday night program at West of the Pecos Park featuring gunfighters, a trial and hanging, saloon girls, dances and period costumes with a western band and concessions. Wednesday hosts Fest II at Municipal Park with tug of war, greased pig, hayrides and petting zoo plus bands and food. Thursday offers Rotary Rodeo Revue at Pecos High School Auditorium with Golden Girl of the Old West and regional belles in Gay Nineties outfits. Friday parades downtown with floats and horses followed by a rodeo Friday through Monday at Fort Stockton Highway arena featuring bronco riding calf roping bull dogging barrel racing and bull riding.
