The Red Bluff tragedy prompts calls for caution at lake resorts. Albert Alexander's death marks the first at the reservoir and officials urge safer boating, better equipment, and reduced risk as holidays draw crowds. Families grieve while urging preventive measures to stop repeat drownings.
Twelve rookies and seven veterans were assigned to posts in Texas Highway Patrol’s western district on Saturday. Capt. E. M. Wells leads Pecos, with Royce Black, J. D. White, Byron L. St. Clair, C. A. Cockrell Jr., R. C. Sallee, G. P. Townsend, R. C. Johnson and L. H. Lovelace among the seniors. El Paso sub station adds Sergt. Guy Smith, J. M. Hellums, Jack Neal, W. C. Lehman and Bill Petmecky. Alpine hosts Miles Ford and W. F. Davidson. Van Horn hosts E. H. Davidson and R. L. Roddey. Brownson and Maloch at a rookie post. Van Horn and Fort Stockton become new sub stations. The force totals nineteen officers patrolling El Paso to Odessa to the New Mexico border. Aimed to prevent repeats of the Frome killings near Van Horn. Pecos hosted the first meeting of new and old officers for immediate duty assignments.
Lillian Young was chosen to represent the Pecos Lions Club at the Fort Stockton Water Carnival bathing revue. She will appear in the West Texas Bathing Revue on Saturday June 18, the second night of the three day carnival.
John C. Dunagan of Monahans has placed an inboard motorboat at Red Bluff Reservoir and plans to erect a private boat dock soon. The 21 foot craft is among the largest inboard-motor boats to appear at the lake.
Pecos hosts its ninth annual rodeo July 2 3 and 4 with three honor days for Farm and Ranch Day Petroleum Day and Highland Hereford Day. Neighbor towns are invited to send delegations and two queen candidates, Dorothy Smith and Kathleen Lewis, have entered the race. Bucking stock includes 96 Brahma Mexican Hereford head and 14 bucking horses. The Stockton Dun will challenge riders while arena dust is controlled by sprinkling before shows. Jim Ross Balmorhea Texan and Deputy Maley will pay prizes. Buck Jackson returns as announcer.
Albert A. Alexander, 38, drowned when his fishing boat capsized on Red Bluff lake Sunday morning near Pecos. Mrs. Alexander and 7-year-old Doris Carol watched from shore as the craft overturned. Body found Tuesday night near the emergent point after an intensive search. Funeral services were held at Pecos Funeral Home with Masonic and Scottish Rite affiliations noted. Survivors include wife Edna, daughter Doris Carol, and his parents.
Kathleen Lewis, a Pecos high school student and daughter of Mr and Mrs Bob Lewis, was selected Miss Enterprise for Fort Stockton's water carnival revue to be held next weekend.
About 120 IOOF and Rebekah members from West Texas gathered for a two day convention in Pecos. Distinguished visitors included M. M. Madison of Big Spring Grand Master and E. C. Weaver Grand Patriarch with his wife. It marked the 37th annual session with new officers elected and lodge awards for degree work. Diane and Ronnie Roberson were named mascots for the coming year. Delegates represented Pecos Odessa Midland Stanton and Big Spring.
The Orient Hotel, a Pecos landmark, is sold to rancher W. W. Courtney of 20 miles south of Pecos. Courtney bought it from L. E. Patterson of Oklahoma City, the owner for four years. Ownership transfer becomes effective July 1.
Dr. and Mrs. Paul Heiser and Dr. and Mrs. Byron Lackey attended the New Mexico Dental Convention in Carlsbad this week, marking their participation in the annual gathering.
Pecos oldest June bride Mrs. T. J. Sisk and her husband observe their 65th anniversary with quiet reflection due to Mrs. Sisk illness. The couple married in Georgia on June 8, 1873, lived there six years, then Sherman, then Pecos since 1889. Their children are Albert Sisk and John Sisk with daughter Mrs A E Wilcox, plus grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Deadline for formal filing passed Wednesday at midnight with several candidates already assured on the ballot. County offices have until June 18 to file for inclusion, while many announced candidates await formal submission before the first Democratic primary on July 23.
A Ward county grand jury on Friday returned no bills against Melvin Moore 21 of Odonnell after investigation of a collision near Barstow that killed 19 year old J C Jackson and Louise Everett and fatally injured Mrs Everett. Moore and Ralph James were uninjured.
The Red Bluff Water Power Control District accepted a low bid of 35 cents a yard from T. N. McWhirter of Pecos for clay blanketing on the Red Bluff dam. Engineer O. N. Floyd recommended the project. Work covers moving and placing 3,000 to 5,000 cubic yards of clay along 700 feet of the dam toe.
Mayor Toliver announced strict two hour parking enforcement in Pecos three blocks on Oak Street between First and Fourth. Curbs will bear two hour signs. enforcement begins after signs are painted. Violators face arrest and fines. City aims to ease downtown congestion and protect trade. Cooperation from workers who stay all day is requested. all day parking available in lots and side streets.
El Paso visitors on a tour of eastern New Mexico and West Texas will lunch at Brandon Coffee Shop at 11 30 today. Ben Smith says all Chamber of Commerce members are invited as the group stops an hour in each town after a night in Midland and a stop in Pecos before Fort Stockton and the Davis Mountains.
SANTALOUPE growers foresee a top melon crop with picking near in ten days to two weeks. Harold Wendt plans to start harvest in ten days, while H. C. Bryan aims by July. Wendt and adjoining landowners expect the largest Pecos area crop, with others like M. L. Todd, J. W. Brooks, and Mrs. B. G. Smith planting sizable holdings though weather delayed growth and replanting will push work back three to four weeks.

Last Saturday 12 200 small bass from the San Angelo hatchery were placed in Red Bluff reservoir. The lake has been stocked several times and many fish were washed in by New Mexico floodwaters last summer.
Sul Ross and Weatherford Junior College will meet in Pecos on Saturday September 24 at Rotary Field under lights. The game, arranged by the Pecos Chamber of Commerce, will be split gate receipts with Sul Ross and Weatherford, aims to boost local college football and solidify Rotary Field as an annual site. Weatherford seeks to defend last year’s junior college district title and bring nearly the same squad to Pecos.
Voters rejected merging the Balmorhea and Saragosa independent school districts by 67 to 46. Saragosa turnout 62 against and 18 for, Balmorhea 28 for and 5 against. County Judge J. B. Woolfolk oversaw election after a petition circulated locally. It followed a prior similar defeated proposal, with high interest and reported boiling tempers.
