Oters of Pecos Independent School District will vote in a special election on June 14 to issue 120000 dollars in school bonds for a new elementary building. The board acted after a petition with 31 signatures, surpassing the required 20. Senate Bill 467, effective May 13, lets the district appoint an equalization board to raise valuations for school taxes, smoothing higher assessments without new tax rolls. Pecos Carlsbad Highway Reopens After Flood Damage
Torrential rains north of Pecos damaged six bridge approaches on the Pecos Carlsbad highway and washed out a section. Detour in place since Sunday. about 50 people, including children, stranded until repairs. George Finley waded through floodwaters to deliver milk and food to the stranded.

Water surge fills Red Bluff reservoir boosting irrigation
Heavy rains across New Mexico sent floods into the Red Bluff reservoir, raising storage to 143000 acre feet and edging toward 200000 acre feet in a week. Pecos Men Abandon Car In Floodwaters
J. Y. Crum and Bob Coffee rode Crum’s car through an old lake bed in Loving County north of Mentone last week. Floodwaters drowned the motor and the car was abandoned as the two men waded out after it was completely covered by water from heavy rains.

Twister Hits Barstow Causing Major Property Damage
A tornado and accompanying cloudburst near Barstow damaged barns and businesses, severed telephone and electric lines, and caused about 40000 dollars in loss. Farmers reported cotton crop harm from hail and mud while a hay barn owned by Ed and Jim Miller along Highway 80 was destroyed. Pecos also saw strong winds but limited damage.

Summer School Opens In Pecos Elementary Grades
Mrs. Lillie Cole opened summer school classes in Pecos elementary grades Monday with 10 pupils enrolled. Students may cover two subjects during the five week program six days per week. High school participation did not justify courses this term.

Beach to be opened at Red Bluff reservoir
A bathing beach will open at Red Bluff reservoir 45 miles north of Pecos on June 12. Judge J. E. Starley announced the step toward turning the reservoir into a large recreational center. The reservoir is expected to hold about 200 000 acre feet of water by opening day, two thirds full, with plans to stock game fish later. A swimming contest between the Pecos Lions and Rotary clubs may headline the event, and other aquatic events are possible. A large Pecos attendance is anticipated.

Three Injured in Auto Crash Near Kent
El Paso residents Bob Corbett Frances Herring and O J Wilson were injured when their car overturned four times after a rear tire blowout near Kent. Corbett broke his hip Herring suffered a broken arm and Wilson had minor injuries. All were taken to a local hospital by Captain Johnnie Burns Balmorhea for treatment.

The Pecos Lions Club challenged the Rotary Club to a swimming contest on June 12 at the Red Bluff bathing beach opening. Flora Lea Cleveland sang and Mrs Marion Ailes played the accordion during the luncheon program. Lions plan to elect officers next week.

Rains Bring Mixed News to Trans-Pecos Farmers
Heavy three day rains in the Trans-Pecos brought optimism as Red Bluff reservoir met Pecos valley irrigation needs. Yet cotton, hay and cantaloupe crops suffered damage with 400 to 500 acres of cotton needing replanting and some fields washed or buried by wind and silt. Hay and cantaloupes also damaged while beets in a seed trial benefited from cool rains.
