President Nixon says it is ridiculous for the federal government to own over half the land in some Western states. Aides later said the White House was not presenting a new policy and that remarks were preliminary.
Joseph A Bradley will lead the Pecos Enterprise advertising department overseeing display and classified sales and developing retail ad programs. Formerly assistant to the publisher at Lewistown Sentinel he was raised in Carlsbad New Mexico and is a New Mexico Military Institute and Texas Tech graduate. Bradley, unmarried, has moved to Pecos and is son of Dr. and Mrs J A Bradley.
The civil jury is set to convene September 11 in Reeves County District Court 143rd Judicial District with Judge J H Starley presiding. Pre trial conferences occur August 31, docket call at 8 40 a m, and jurors report at 9 a m. Cases listed include Couch versus Mobil Oil and Smith versus Toyah.
The Evening Optimist Club hosts a grand opening for the remodelled Saragosa Hall at 6th and Peach Streets from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday. City and county officials and out of town guests are invited. Proceeds from $2 barbecue plates go to Boy Scout Troop 91 under Scoutmaster Y L Dominguez.
At a quarterly directors meeting Texas Cattle Feeders Association president Tom Herrick accepted the resignation of executive vice president Lloyd Bergsma. Bergsma helped form the association in 1967 and drove growth from 21 to 850 members as it promotes beef, research and service for the cattle feeding industry.
World chess champion Boris Spassky trails by one point in the seventh game with Bobby Fischer as he opens with a king's pawn, signaling an all out battle. Fischer answers with pawn to queen's bishop four in a Sicilian defense, a sharp choice in a match famed for decisive results. Temperatures forecast in the upper 80s to 90s with mild nighttime lows as a hot day follows.
The Senate approved Sen. Lloyd Bentsen's measure by 86 to 0 to cover federal state and local government workers under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act as an amendment to the Taft-Dominick Sub stitute Minimum Wage Act. Bentsen urged stronger enforcement and noted few prosecutions since 1967.
Crane Texas will host a day long celebration on August 1 marking the county’s 45th anniversary and a milestone oil output. The event features a parade at 2 p.m. a 3 p.m. ice cream freeze-off 4 p.m. old timers reunion 5 p.m. reception 3 p.m. barbecue beard and beauty contests at 7 p.m. and a dance at 9 30 p.m. downtown Crane on highway 285 with dignitaries attending.
A two year old Pecos child Ramiro Salava Jr. fell from the back of a moving station wagon driven by his father in Odessa. Officer Jim Dodson witnessed the accident. The child suffered facial and head injuries and was admitted to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa in satisfactory condition for observation.
Jane Mattox, 16, daughter of Mr and Mrs Bill Mattox of 516 Ross Blvd, is a Pecos High School senior and varsity cheerleader. A member of the Pecos Eagle Band, choir, tennis team, Spanish Club, Catholic Church, and Catholic Youth Organization, she will model two 100 percent cotton outfits at the Miss Cotton pageant on August 1 at Pecos Valley Country Club. escorted by Wendell Faulkner. The event is annual, by the Cotton Crusaders, and tickets are available through members.
The Presidential Museum in Odessa adds items from the Miami Beach Democratic Convention to its "Presidential Conventions & Campaigns" exhibit, with pieces from the Republican Convention to follow. The display features over 25,000 items tracing 35 conventions and 46 elections, including badges, tickets, medals, and portraits, open 8 to 3 Monday through Saturday with free admission.
In Blacksville West Virginia Consol Coal officials confirmed nine miners trapped by a fire in Blacksville No 1 mine. A microphone lowered into a 650 foot bore hole yielded no response while air samples revealed lethal methane. Crews sealed the mine with concrete and steel to prevent further explosions after three blasts halted rescue efforts.
