Pecos residents are urged to sustain bicentennial celebrations beyond the national milestone. The Pecos Bicentennial Commission plans ongoing events through December 31 while ARBA organizers push local archives and museum-friendly preservation. Citywide construction activity in Pecos nears $10 million with major projects including a $2.7 million school, $2.5 million hospital, and a $400,000 motel plan. Additional builds include Safeway on Eddy Street, Jerry McGowan law offices, and a Texas Department of Public Safety building. A $324,262 Cedar Street highway upgrade and a $145,000 IH 20 ramp project South of town accompany other June permits totaling $35,690 for local work and 11 home-improvement permits.
Gene Douglas argues that signed letters are not a guarantee of truth and questions the value of exposing writer names. He notes anonymous remarks can still convey credibility or harm and recalls historical roots of letters to the editor, warnings about censorship, and the balance between free speech and responsible discourse.
