The United States rejected the Viet Cong demand for total U S withdrawal by year end as unacceptable in present form but noted some new elements in seven point plan. Ambassador Bruce and Saigon aim to explore the package further at the Paris talks in a restricted session next Thursday.
Five year old Ralph Corralez Jr. was struck while crossing U S 285 near a firecracker stand. He suffered a broken right arm and other injuries and was hospitalized overnight. Investigators from the Pecos Department of Public Safety are pursuing leads and seek tips from the public.
Albert R. Appleby chairman of the local Business Executives Move for Vietnam Peace says the group will seek donations after the federal grand jury completes its investigation into the Pentagon papers leak. Ellsberg is praised as a true patron by Appleby in announcing the effort.
Gov. Preston Smith’s office announced that Secretary of State Martin Dies Jr. will be named to the 9th Court of Civil Appeals at Beaumont. Dies, 49, a former state senator from Lufkin for eight years, was appointed secretary of state in January 1969.
In Helsinki the fifth round of SALT talks opened as Gerard Smith and Vladimir Semenov met on procedural matters. Both sides said they sought concrete results and prepared for the first full session at the Soviet Embassy.
Florida faces the worst red tide outbreak in about 25 years leaving miles of Gulf Coast beaches dead fish and a deep toll on tourist businesses. The plant like organism forms patches that tint the water and release a toxin as it dies, paralyzing fish though not harming humans unless contaminated seafood is eaten.
In Paris the weekly session of the peace talks opened with focus on Mrs. Nguyen Thi Binh's Viet Cong proposal. The plan demands U S withdrawal from South Vietnam by year end and links prisoner releases to the withdrawal in a step by step process beginning and ending together.
Todor Zhivkov resigns as premier and the Bulgarian National Assembly names him state president under a new constitution. BTA reports Stanko Todorov, a 50 year old economist and No 2 party man, becomes premier.
Billie Sol Estes, once a Pecos resident and promoter, will be freed Monday from La Tuna Correctional Institution near El Paso. Warden William Zachem said Estes asked for a quiet release with no reporters or photographers present. Estes was convicted on fraud involving about 24 million dollars in mortgaged property.
Estes, declared bankrupt with assets of 1.7 million and debts of 34 million, received a 15 year sentence and began prison on March 5 1965. Parole after about six years with no self employment. He is to work on farms owned by his brother Dr John L Estes Jr a Callahan County Abilene dentist.
Patrol covered 14 643 miles answering 694 calls and recovered 40 percent of property reported lost. Property loss valued at 1514 dollars with 615.30 recovered. Five aggravated assaults reported with four cleared and one pending. Vandalism led with 10 cases. theft over five dollars had nine complaints. Fourteen property offenses cleared and twenty pending. One narcotic offense investigated and cleared. Twenty general offenses noted.
Pecos High School rounds out summer session with nine days remaining. Enrollment shows 268 students, 48 in English, and the rest in Drivers Education. Twelve cases cleared and eight pending. total offenses 60 with 31 cleared. Corporation Court processed 20 cases, 7 drunk charges led offenses. Forty eight jail arrests in 30 days. 114 traffic citations issued. Public service calls totaled 40 with funeral escorts five, other escorts 24, fire traffic control 10, and one parade.
The Pecos Twirling School, led by Frances Malek, presents a recital at Pecos High School Auditorium tomorrow at 2 30 p m. The program features en ensemble strut dance fire two baton and hoop routines and closes week long instruction. Five divisions cover girls ages 6 through senior year with novice I intermediate I and II and advance groups.
Florencio Armendarez Hignojos aged 85 of 818 S Walnut died at Memorial Hospital after arriving Wednesday at 6 30 p m. Survived by wife Bruna five sons Maurice Calistro Felix Porbio and Eulojio all Pecos. five daughters Gregoria Elena Abelina Juana Siria all in Pecos and Odessa. two brothers Angelito Barstow Senobio Midland. sister Paula Bueno Holland Michigan.
Two Air Force C123 Providers arrived in the Lower Rio Grande Valley to spray and curb Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis. Three patients at Mercy Hospital Brownsville showed symptoms as officials test blood samples, while 14 horses near sick stock are quarantined.
The June municipal court report shows $2 254 in fines collected led by drunk charges at $220 and disorderly conduct $195. Driving without a license yielded $545, speeding $190, with other violations contributing smaller sums. The Associated Press notes intense heat across Texas with 105 degrees at Mineral Wells and highs over 100 in multiple cities.

The Pecos Town Council approved two vehicle purchases after bidding. Pecos Motors Inc. won the patrol car bid at 2 802.10 and Crow Chevrolet-Buick Co. won the water and sewer pickup truck bid at 2 584.65. The June city bills totaling 25 492.03 were approved and a lease to the Reeves Estate to move a building from a .27 acre tract in the airport addition was authorized.
