Morgan wins Memphis Classic with 40-foot playoff putt
Gil Morgan, 33, an Oklahoma optometrist, captured $54,000 at the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic after sinking a 40-foot playoff putt on the 18th hole against Larry Nelson at Colonial Country Club. Morgan drained 8 birdies, survived a late-round wobble, and tied Nelson at 10-under with a final-par effort. Nelson missed a 10-foot birdie by six inches, sending the event to sudden death. Morgan described the ball in fluffy grass relief before the winning putt. In a separate note, Chris Taylor, 29, former NCAA heavyweight champion and 1972 Olympic bronze medalist, died at his Iowa home from natural causes after a wrestling career plagued by hepatitis and phlebitis.
