Cotton samples totaling about 2,100 bales in Pecos were classified for growers as of January 7, led by Mack Bennett of the USDA Classing Office in Carlsbad. The season total reached 55,285. White grades accounted for 41 percent, with Strict Low Middling 12 percent and Good Ordinary 11 percent. Light Spotted 27 percent and Spotted 12 percent. Bark content dropped nearly half the samples, 19 percent below grade. Staple lengths ranged from 26 to 36 inches, with 32 inches most common at 25 percent.
