Check for ticks in livestock ears in Reeves Pecos Counties
Livestock producers in Reeves and Pecos Counties are urged to inspect cattle for rising spinose ear ticks. County Extension Agent Dan Gary and Entomologist Charles Neeb note ear ticks infest ears causing irritation, wax buildup, infections, and reduced thrift. Ticks feed on blood, stressing animals in winter and lowering feed efficiency, with nymphs visible after several meals. Ticks affect cattle horses dogs sheep and other farm animals and may live in ears one to seven months. Full grown nymphs leave hosts after feeding and molt to adults, eggs laid off ground, seed ticks reattach to continue the cycle. Control via individual ear sprays or dusts using Co-Ral Lindane Malathion Ronnel or Toxaphene, after cleaning ears and reading label cautions and slaughter intervals. Contact Pecos County Extension Office for full guidance and a free MP-601 publication.
