President Nixon, on a weeklong stay at the California White House, plans to draft and sharpen his State of the Union address. He aims to renew administration proposals rejected or unacted by the 91st Congress as Congress opens in Washington.
Police investigate a reported clash between actor John Wayne and Vietnam war protesters waving Viet Cong flags. Wayne denied the incident. Gregory Kirkwood, 22, filed a complaint seeking disturb ing the peace charges, claiming Wayne called him a dirty name.
Senator Lee Metcalf cites Federal Power Commission data showing privately owned electric utilities spend seven and a half times more on advertising and sales rhetoric than on research and development. He accuses investor owned firms of launching another deceptive ad campaign.
The defense for Angela Davis says it will seek moving her trial from Marin County courthouse where four men died in an escape attempt she is accused of helping to plot. Howard Moore Jr. leads the five lawyer team and will pursue San Francisco or Los Angeles as the new venue.
The Colorado Environmental Commission seeks to preserve wide open spaces around the four county Denver metro by capping population at 1.5 million, 250000 more than current residents.

Taft Fuller, 62, released on parole from Tennessee State Prison, walked out with 37.10 dollars and a Dallas bus ticket. He had spent 37 years seven months and one day in the Tennessee system and had been known as the forgotten man since 1959 when no mail or visitors reached him for 15 years.
The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals orders a new trial in a long dispute over natural gas extraction from the Appling Field near the Middle Texas Coast. A three judge panel reversed and remanded in part the trial court verdict on Calhoun and Jackson Counties gas rights.
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association asked private pilots to use their vantage points to capture images of serious air pollution for local or national clean air agencies.
Washington AP report shows Edmund Muskie and Gerald Ford listed as receiving donations from the Bankers Political Action Committee. The committee, under investigation on two fronts, says it had 120000 dollars it could not give away. Six other senators and 37 representatives received 167000 dollars mostly in the days before the election. House and Senate leaders are named among recipients. A House probe heads to Congress next week and a Justice Department inquiry is sought by Rep Patman.
