Merchants Plan Talks Over Oak Street Traffic Signals

Pecos residents and downtown merchants prepare to address city leaders and District 6 Highway Engineer Paul Coleman at 7 30 a m Thursday in city hall to protest the lack of traffic control at Oak Street crossings. Coleman cites 8123 58 spent on Cedar and Eddy lights and estimates Oak Cedar signals would cost about 10000. He advised installing signals at Oak and Cedar when old lights were removed but the state refused due to low traffic counts. Cedar Street showed 97 5 percent, other intersections 72 percent or less. Traffic activated signals let through traffic run until a street crossing switch triggers a halt, with pedestrians using a school crossing style switch. City Manager Maxey pledges city support for popular traffic control, as letters opposing the system are prepared for the council by chamber reps.
