Barstow FM 516 Reconstruction Plans Announced
The Texas Highway Department outlines reconstruction of FM 515 from FM 873 in Barstow to 7.8 miles north and FM 516. The project widens right of way from 40 feet outside Barstow to 100 feet minimum, 120 feet usual, with two 10 foot lanes, 4 foot shoulders, drainage and clearance. Public hearing requests due by Feb 25. Police appeal for help after Pecos home blaze

Unemployment Dips While Jobless Rise in January
The unemployment rate edged from 6 to 5.9 percent as jobless counts climbed to 9,447,000, while total employment rose 240,000 to 80,636,000. Average earnings rose to 3.53 per hour for 45 million workers, with weekly earnings up 7.32 over a year, and the average work week fell 18 minutes to 36.9 hours.

Grand Jury Indicts Seven Defendants in Reeves County
The Reeves County Grand Jury returned seven indictments this morning. Four defendants are in custody, two out on bail, one not yet apprehended. Indicted for felony theft are Joseph Wilson Poston and Richard Lester Swatts. Celerino Zapata Navarette faces theft charges for a 1970 Chevrolet pickup. Robert Ortega Vasquez and Buford Tipton Chesney charged with marijuana possession. Sammie Burleson allegedly forged a $20 check signed Ray Williams and passed it at Gibson's Discount Center on December 24, 1971. Both Navarette and Chesney are out on $5,000 bonds.
