A new hospital opens with ceremonies at 2 p m and a spacious lobby. Five wings surround a central nursing station with departments including Nursing Emergency Obstetrics Medical-Surgical and Intensive Care. New OB with own staff and neonatal care enhances infant care and home guidance. Continued on page 7.
A dedication ceremony for the Reeves County Hospital is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday Feb 5, followed by an open house until 5 p.m. Richard A Lockwood M D will speak, as the hospital invites the public to tour the facility. Dr Lockwood is vice president of Texas Tech University Health Science Centers and the University School of Medicine at Lubbock.
Washington AP negotiations between United Mine Workers and coal industry recessed after 14 hours with no accord on a 60 day strike. Horvitz said no agreement tonight though talks may resume. union seeks more economic concessions while industry balks at wage demands. Utilities warn of coal shortages affecting power as Carter pressed for intervention.

Dr Elvin Reynolds former Pecos Barstow Toyah ISD board chairman, long time Pecos resident, Rotary director and past president, seeks Reeves County Commissioner Precinct Four. He notes his public service in Pecos and Arkansas, WWII Army service, and urges voters to judge by need and feasibility.
The Labor Department reports 270000 more jobs in January bringing employment to 92.9 million while unemployment stays at 6.2 million. The rate falls to 6.3 percent the lowest in over three years though black workers face high joblessness with 12.7 percent overall and 38.7 percent for black youths.
An inquest will begin Feb 14 in Odessa to determine if Pecos man Larry Lozano died by suicide or as a result of beating in the Ector County jail. Lozano, 27, died Jan 22 after arrest Jan 10 for allegedly assaulting a police officer amid mental disturbance.
Pecos reported an overnight low of 35 degrees with a high of 52 degrees on Thursday. The forecast calls for mostly fair weather through Saturday with warm days and partly cloudy conditions in the southeast today.
