FAA unveils sweeping air safety program nationwide
The FAA announced a comprehensive plan to reduce in flight collisions by expanding radar at 80 airports, creating terminal control areas at 44 sites, placing busy routes under ATC, widening altitude reporting transponder use, and installing collision avoidance in most airliners. The program, prompted by the 1975 San Diego crash, requires 330 new air traffic controllers and about 54 million dollars in first year costs, with financing from Transportation Secretary Brock Adams. The effort aims to boost safety for millions of airline travelers as passenger numbers rise toward 1980.
