A northbound cattle truck veered off a guard rail on a narrow eastern New Mexico bridge and crashed into a chartered bus carrying a Woodlawn Baptist Church youth group bound for a Vacita ski retreat near Glorieta. Authorities report 19 dead and 14 to 16 injured. Edward Lee, 17, survived after waking from a nap.
Managua reels from a major quake with fires, looting, and corpses in the rubble. Somoza blames insured fires while others cite looting and demolition crews. Casualties estimated 3,000 to 6,000 with up to 20,000 injured as aid pours in and survivors crowd roads for relief.
A teen from Austin describes the group traveling to be with each other and seek spiritual solace after a New Mexico bus crash killed or left missing 19 people. George Henry stood outside Woodlawn Baptist Church with friends as church members help survivors, the dead, and the injured. The Rev. James W. Abington and the Rev. M. Abington console families and coordinate support for those affected.
Former President Harry S. Truman travels from his Independence home to his namesake library for the final time as a funeral procession returns him to the building. A simple transfer is planned, with a National Cathedral memorial in Washington forthcoming.
A cold front sent freezing temperatures across Texas with dawn readings from 22 at Wink to 39 in Brownsville. Highs reached 60 in parts of the state while precipitation held off except the Pacific Northwest. Other regions saw strong winds, 58 mph at Livingston, and widespread fair weather elsewhere.
City police handled family disturbances, firecracker reports, burglaries and six minor crash injuries none reported. Incidents include a four-vehicle rear end on W Fourth Street and multiple street collisions plus thefts from a Shell station and a trailer wheels theft, with several residents named.
Observances are planned from Hawaii to the East Coast for Thursday as a national day of mourning for former president Harry S Truman who died Tuesday. Ft Shafter Hawaii and Albany New York plan 21 gun salutes at noon and 50 gun salutes at 5 p m. State offices close and flags half staff with private businesses urged to close in some states as Nixon ordered the closures.
U.S. Government offices will close all day Thursday in mourning for President Truman. The local post office window will be closed and no mail will be delivered that day. Local, county and state offices, banks, and business houses will remain open.
Johnny Holub of Community Public Service Co. received the 1972 President's contest trophy for the West Texas division at the Pecos Valley Country Club awards banquet on Dec. 8. The division includes Sanderson, Kermit and Fort Stockton.
