Senate seeks raise in oil allowances
The Texas Senate voted 22 to 8 to ask Congress to restore the oil depletion allowance to 27.5 percent and to lift price controls on equipment for oil and gas production while suspending auto emission rules in some areas. Sen. Peyton McKnight, sponsor, urged federal action to free the oil industry to meet demand amid energy shortages. He argued environmental controls should not cripple industry and jobs, and noted the EPA favors stringent standards. Amendments proposed would end the depletion allowance on foreign oil and noted former Railroad Commission chairman Ernest Thompson’s warnings on resource use.
