The USS Sanctuary shakedown cruise marks the first Navy ship with women aboard. Forty female crew join 480 men in noncombat roles from deck hands to hospital corps, facing both work and romance aboard the ship.
Pe cos City Council set an 8:45 a.m. December 28 public hearing on annexation for Union 76 Oil Co. to build a truck stop at the 1920 U.S. 285 interchange. The council also considered bids for a fire truck and paving, adopted a traffic control ordinance, and discussed sewer and water needs with Union 76 offering to fund a larger lift station.
Two sappers blew up an ammo dump seven miles southeast of Saigon triggering a massive blast that shattered windows across the city. Within twelve hours about 1,000 tons of shells and napalm were still detonating as black smoke blotted the sky. A South Vietnamese officer said there was nothing to do but let it burn out. The saboteurs were spotted and fired on but escaped, leaving time charges that later exploded.
Pecos Boys Club, Inc organized in spring aims to open a youth program soon after Boys Club Week March 4 10. Rev Ed Sullivan says budget 18000 dollars, seeking federal grant. community support vital. Board includes Jesse Villescas vice chairman Bobby Idol treasurer Janet Windham secretary. Local Odessa group assisted.
James Monroe Cooksey II 60 of Pecos died January in Carlsbad New Mexico. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Friday at First United Methodist Church with interment in Fairview Cemetery. Survived by wife Evelyn a son James Monroe III a daughter Draper Brantley Jr mother Rosabelle Cooksey brother Bill Cooksey and sister Jiggs Dinwiddie. Other local agenda items include traffic light policy on U.S. 80 city land sale near the water tower and permit requests for Santa Rosa Hall dances and Teener Park beer discussion. Current tax receipts and Pecos Ambulance Service billing were reviewed.
The United States endorsed President Nguyen Van Thien's Christmas peace package and charged North Vietnam with high pressure to push an incomplete settlement. At the same time Le Duc Tho, negotiating with Henry Kissinger, was said to be returning soon to Hanoi.
Coastal States Gas and Jack Blair report No. 1 Jean Spencer Trust in Reeves County as a Siluro-Devonian gas discovery with an absolute open flow of 22 188 MMcf per day. The well was acidized and drilled to 13 033 feet, with casing details and site location noted. Ward County also sees a Pennsylvanian oil well Sealy field results and Rack of completions including JVS Sealy and Cooper outpost activity near Pyote Kyate.
The second batch of nasty weather in a week blankets much of Texas with freezing rain and snow. The Panhandle Plains region from Borger to Lamesa and into New Mexico sees mixed precipitation and fog causing hazards on bridges and overpasses. Temperatures fall to 17 in Amarillo and 19 in Dalhart while southern areas remain mild. Postmaster announces Parcel Post window Saturday 8:30 am to noon for last minute mail.
A Kandinsky style? Not necessary. The Russells of Pecos presented a cocktail party style art show at the Holiday Inn drawing more than 250 attendees. Marian Jim and Jeanne Russell exhibited about 200 paintings ranging from character studies to Western landscapes and still lifes, praised by an observer for overall quality.
Two couples found a red fire truck occupying Lovers Lane when they arrived Saturday night. Fire Chief J. T. Prewit said the vehicle was taken from the South Eddy Street sub-station for a joy ride. the truck was undamaged and nothing was missing, though firemen might have been embarrassed if an alarm had been rung.

He and Harrison Schmitt spent 22 hours on the surface, gathered over 200 pounds of samples, erected an atomic powered station, and urged peace and cooperation among nations as they prepared to depart. Ronald Evans orbited the moon aboard America as the crew concluded the historic mission.
