Triticale firm folds leaving Washington growers strides in limbo

Prosser farmers who planned to ship 11 500 tons of triticale to Triticale Industries Inc of Amarillo faced a collapse as the Texas firm defaulted on buying contracts and reportedly lacked financing. Washington Food and Fiber Inc formed to market the crop while growers gauge options, with 140 farmers growing 8 000 acres this year and 1 000 more planned for next year. Some fear the grain may fetch only animal-feed prices until markets and financing are found.
