Pearl Harbor survivors in Honolulu commemorate the attack's 35th anniversary. Veterans express vivid memories with little bitterness, urging forgiveness and the spirit of aloha to replace wartime resentment.
Kurt Waldheim won Security Council backing for another term as U.N. secretary general after an initial Chinese veto, with a 14 to 0 vote and one abstention in the second round. The General Assembly is expected to confirm him as head of the world body.
Pecos residents faced a quiet Sunday noon on December 7 1941 as news spread of the Pearl Harbor attack. The town soon shifted from routine to wartime urgency with recruitment drives and plans to send locals overseas, while many older inhabitants recall the era through memories and photographs in the courthouse lobby.
A mistrial was declared today in the political corruption trial of Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel and four codefendants after judges ruled publicity interfered with sequestered jurors. Prosecutors had asked jurors not discuss the case as a new trial loomed. Mandel expressed mixed feelings as he prepared to resume budget work.

A major cold front swept Texas dropping readings to single digits in West Texas while Brownsville stayed warm at 48. Amarillo and Lubbock saw 29 and 17. skies varied from clouds in East and South Texas to clear elsewhere with a promised warming in the northwest. Snow battered the Midwest with 6 inches in parts of Wisconsin and Illinois, and subzero lows hit Iowa Minnesota Wisconsin and northern Illinois as travel became hazardous.

Eddy hosts JoAnn and Tommy Beauchamp for a grand opening sale, then Like New Upholstery at 311 S. Eddy owned by Sharon New of Toyah opens, followed by Don's TV and Repair at 309 S. Eddy owned by Don Leech.
