Highest paid Pete Rose signs Phillies contract
Pete Rose signed a four year 3.2 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, insisting he accepted the lowest of five bids. The 37 year old future Hall of Fame candidate left the Reds after 16 seasons to join the Phillies and led a news conference at the Winter Meetings. Rose highlighted his 3,164 hits, 44 game hitting streak, 12 All star selections and nine 200 hit seasons as justification for his pay. He said he aimed to be perceived as No 1 and noted the Phillies offered the lowest bid among suitors but saw value in joining the club. The Royals Pirates Braves and Cardinals were among others in the sweepstakes.
