Boots, a small black Chihuahua Dachshund mix about two years old, attracted South Pecos Elementary School students who staged a penny drive to rescue him from the pound. The dog roamed the playground during dismissal and followed kids home, often landing at the Boatright residence on Eddy Street.
Boots the stray dog became the South Pecos Elementary sixth grade mascot and was later impounded by animal control. Students raised about 20 dollars in two days to vaccinate and license him, with a class campaign Care For Boots. Boots now awaits adoption as teachers and students hope for a loving home.

Federal agents in Northern California arrested four men in the bears hashish smuggling case. Cages and two 200 pound bears were seized with 32 two pound hashish bundles found in one cage. One bear and another cage carrying about 64 pounds remained missing after the raid near Big Bend in the Sierra. Bail was reduced for several defendants at a Redding arraignment.
Building permits for November totaled 6189 dollars, more than twice the 1971 figure of 2700. Additions dominated activity with multiple homeowners listed and costs ranging from 80 to 3000 dollars.
