Reeves County mulls bond vote for new court house

Out Our Way argues Reeves County Commissioners should call a December bond election to fund a replacement court house. It notes the current building is antiquated and costly to repair, with cost savings in rising material and labor prices. A levy of about 14.42 cents per $100 of valuation would finance the project with a slight rate increase beneath previous cuts, and Christmas décor plans and Pecos charity jars are also highlighted as community efforts.

J I Street Opens Fine Plumbing Showroom in Pecos

J I Street, local plumbing and sheet metal dealer, is building a modern showroom in the old Pecos Chamber of Commerce location in the Security State Bank building. The display will show complete plumbing supplies as they appear in place with attractive wall board to resemble bathroom walls. The office will be here, but the shops stay at the present site. Street invites the public to visit once finished.

Three Mentone youths arrested in Artesia thefts

Cecil White Fonzo White and Don Fred were arrested in Artesia New Mexico two weeks ago and one man signed a confession admitting robberies of Madera Cash Grocery and Pecos Motor Company. The Madera safe was taken and later found in Balmo rhea foothills with money and checks missing. The Pecos Motor Company raid yielded batteries currency and other items. Sheriff Roberson doubts they can be brought back for indictment until Artesia resolves its case.

Pecos to Vote December 19 on Court House Bonds

Pecos voters go to the polls Saturday December 19 to decide a $120000 bond issue for a new county court house. The 30 year bonds would incur about 7077 dollars yearly including interest, raising taxes about 14 cents per hundred, with Reeves county officials arguing the project saves money compared with higher future costs.

Department store sales in Texas for October rose 32.2 percent from a year earlier and 18.3 percent from September, per the University of Texas bureau of business research. Ten month totals were 18.3 percent above the prior year.

Major and Contestants Begin Work On Show

Forty duck stamps have been sold to local sportsmen at the Pecos post office to fund waterfowl preservation. The stamps are voluntary, non tax, with proceeds used to buy land for game preserves under the Agriculture Department. Rehearsals started for Major Bozo's Amateur Hour to aid Pecos Christmas charity, with Lions club organizing acts for the Grand Theatre program on November 17.

Fugitive Capture After Jail Break No. Six Found

Tony Johnson, one of ten prisoners who escaped on September 12, was captured last week in Greenwood Mississippi after a tip from his sweetheart. Ward County Sheriff Irby Dyer will extradite him. Johnson waived extradition. Four other escapees have been captured. four remain missing including E W Bulldog Pratt and T W Matthews.

Bi District Championship Set For McCamey Field

McCamey prepares for the bi district final featuring the Badgers versus the Bulldogs tomorrow at Badger Field. Reports from 15 Texas counties indicate October automobile sales totaled 4,132, up 10.2 percent from October last year but down 13.4 percent from September. Ten-month 1936 sales reached 60,801, up 22 percent from 1935, with gains strongest in higher price brackets.

Aid Office Opens Here

A sub-district old age assistance office will open in Pecos on December 10. Located in the courthouse, the office will operate three days each month on the first Monday. It will serve Reeves Loving Ward and Winkler counties and will provide investigation services and help with old age assistance applications. Dennis M. Poe, district 20 supervisor, said Poe and assistants will be onsite for three days monthly to offer information and aid.

Sun Bowl Tickets Offered In El Paso by Chamber

Arrangements for the sixteenth annual Firemen's Ball and Banquet began this week with committees formed. The duet for volunteer firefighters will be heard Wednesday night January 13, and the ball on Saturday night January 16.
