Egypt Libyan merger advances amid Sadat Khadafy talks
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Libyan leader Muammar Khadafy agreed on a step by step path to unification. They will form a 106 member constituent assembly on Saturday to draft a constitution for a yet unnamed new state. The assembly will include 50 Egyptian parliament members and 50 Libyan Revolutionary Committee members. After a referendum on the constitution, the two leaders would then nominate a president for the new nation with Khadafy likely to step aside in favor of Sadat. The plan also proposes a new Arab dinar to replace the Egyptian pound and Libyan dinar. No timetable on completion or union date was set. The agreement aims to placate Khadafy while building broader Arab support.
