Judge J A Drane urges Pecos and Trans Pecos readers to market the area for development. He compares modern entrepreneurship to making a better mouse trap and stresses advertising, paving paths to opportunity, and leveraging Red Bluff dam gains, oil activity, cattle recovery, and tourism to boost Pecos trade.
Trans Pecos reports bright prospects as Pecos High Eagles begin football training camp amid a sharp cotton harvest season. First bale of Reeves county cotton arrived, with yield expectations building from Red Bluff and Balmorhea areas. Shortage of pickers looms as alfalfa seed harvest finishes, while leaf worm infestation prompts prompt pesticide action by County Agent Ted Johnston.
Pecos high school boys along with coaches Sam McClure and Harry Holcomb travel to the Madera Canyon camp for a week of blocking passing and mountain climbing to build leg strength. Food and transport provided by the school. players bring only personal gear. After camp, two daily workouts lead to open season practice preparing for Fort Stockton opener. Captains Kenneth Richards and Claire Wicker lead a group of eight lettermen and several new prospects.
Up town Henry Blackwell announced this week final plans are set for the Pecos school opening on Tuesday September 7. Two changes in the faculty were made with Marianne Kingsbury of Denton replacing Ophelia Wood and Jane Guinn of Abilene replacing Elizabeth Sayles. A faculty meeting will precede student enrollment and new students will be classified for proper divisions. Temporary shacks for sixth and seventh grades are being remodeled and the elementary building should be ready by September 1 with minor final work remaining.
Ollie P. Webb of Texas & Pacific Railroad praised present gains and urged Pecos civic groups to capitalize on the Red Bluff project. Col. Thomas Boles of Carlsbad Caverns framed Pecos as a gateway to tourism, while City Judge B A Toliver spoke of a new era of regional development.
A. H. Dunlap of the state board of water engineers favors establishing a state park at Toyah Lake and Irving Springs if local support and a 500 acre minimum are met. He urged fish catches be documented with letters and photos to Dr. James L. Kincannon or B. A. Toliver. The plan envisions a stocked lake, swimming pool, golf course, picnic units and trees.
A national survey on electric and gas refrigerators shows the top advertised model by The Enterprise in 1936 and 1937 also led in sales. The second most advertised refrigerator ranked second in units sold, while the third most advertised model was fourth in sales, suggesting advertising impact.
Funeral services were held in Barstow for Judge J. J. Walker who died Monday night of a heart attack at age 89. Though frail, he had appeared in good health recently and his death came as a shock.
J. D. Shaw of Red Bluff reports plans and specifications are in progress for the district rural electrification program. The Grandfalls diesel standby plant awaits final approval. field notes cover Mentone and the Barstow to Grandfalls 32 mile line with a proposed 7.12 mile Mason oil field section to be omitted.
Judge J A Drane told Pecos Rotary Club that wills education saves estates money and time. He warned self drawn or poorly drawn wills cause trouble and loss of assets. Raymon Pouncey spoke on automobile retailing and its industry challenges. Morris Collie praised The Enterprise for best weekly newspaper in West Texas.
The Pecos Lions and Rotary clubs each gave $25 to the Big Bend park land fund raise, with checks handed to Ben Smith of the Chamber of Commerce. The goal is $1,000,000 and Pecos totals exceed $100. Small donations of $1 came from J. L. Walton Paul Page Bill Kerr Mrs. Dewey Richburg Evelyn Heard and others.
Floyd Stephen received a first class Boy Scout badge at the Pecos Lions Club luncheon on Wednesday. George H. Nagel delivered the presentation speech.
The Enterprise notes new residents in Pecos including M. C. McLane Mrs. S. W. Graham H. T. Williams E. C. Masters and A. M. Dick joining the community this week.
Dresser departed this week for South America to assume a position with Ayers Air Line, expanding the airline’s international staff.
Three Pecos men Joe Lewis W R Stell and R Morrison explored Red Bluff reservoir near the Texas New Mexico line. They found 75 feet deep clear water abundant fish and a large supply of vegetation. They suggested delaying fishing until next August for better stocking and noted several named spots from their trip.
Frank Tillman Durdin, once a Pecos boy and editor of the China Press in Shanghai, was reported safe and not in immediate danger. A cablegram to his mother Mrs. M. A. Durdin said he was unhurt and would wire again soon. Tillman worked seven years in Shanghai and had not returned home.
The Pecos Enterprise received the gold Best Newspaper cup for west Texas weekly papers. The West Texas Press Association awards the trophy each year and engraves the names of the three winning papers on the cup.
Game Warden Curtis McElroy stated the dove season for mourning and white-winged doves runs September 15 to October 31. Both species share a 15 birds per day bag limit and a possession limit of one day's bag.
County Agent Ted Johnston occupied different quarters this week while ceiling plaster in his regular office was repaired. He used the space formerly occupied by WPA officials, signaling a temporary relocation within county offices.
Supt. Murray H. Fly, director of football in District 7 B, calls a meeting for September 10 in Odessa to pass on player eligibility for the coming year. Superintendents and coaches from lower district schools will present new players and officials to work games next season.
The Michigan Oil and Gas Company reports a new test in Loving County has reached 2197 feet, led by Alec McCreery. The drill aims for about 3900 feet near the Minnie Kyle discovery. In Reeves County, General Crude Oil Co’s No 1 T P Land Trust wildcat was temporarily shut down.
Seaside, Oregon resident J. L. Walton sent a dollar to Pecos Chamber of Commerce secretary Ben Smith to aid the Buy-an-Acre fundraising for Big Bend National Park. Walton, a Pecos Enterprise reader, requested a city map and praised the newspaper.
