Texas Atty. Gen. Crawford Martin says he will make one last bid to win federal approval for Texas to grant pay raises to state employees and teachers promised for Sept. 1. He flew to Washington after ruling Texas must follow President Nixon's 90 day wage policy.
Baylor law student Bob Sullivan writes on Texas juvenile process focusing on the policeman's role probation officers and the juvenile court. He critiques crossover duties by police and raises calls for trained court officers amid national debate.
At 10 30 a m only ten voters had cast ballots in the Community Center Banquet Room where residents decide on closing a portion of Missouri Street. The Pecos Barstow CISD asked the city to call the election to consolidate school property. A vocational education building will be built on recently acquired property just west of Missouri Street between Washington and Jackson Streets.
Ice Capades debuts a new 1971 edition at the Ector County Coliseum Odessa from September 8 to 12. The program features a three ring circus theme a fairy tale zodiac inspired acts and international skating stars with special price discounts for youths scouts and groups. Tickets are available at Inn of the Golden West Gibsons Odessa and Midland.
About 200 Pecos Pony League fans greeted the team at Midland Odessa Airport as the World Series run concluded. The Eagle band performed, a key to the city was given to Coach Leo Elliott and staff, and a ceremonial parade accompanied by police escorted them to Pecos. Mayor E W Schmidt read a resolution honoring the players who represented Pecos on the world stage.
A telegram informs Mr and Mrs Joe Knust that their daughter Peggy has arrived safely in Tokyo as Rotary Club foreign exchange student for the year. Fellow exchange students Lisa Peyton and Marolyn Gann departed last week for South Africa and Australia.
The five member legislative redistricting board held its first meeting since formation 23 years ago to draft new state Senate districts. Rep. Curtis Graves urged a Houston seat to elect a black senator, amid a legal challenge over redistricting authority and a restraining order in Austin.
A Community Country Music Jamboree will be held Saturday at 7 30 p m in the South Pecos Elementary School cafetorium. Local residents are invited to sing or play instruments. A practice night is planned at the Community Center Thursday at 7 30 p m. Tickets at the door cost 50 cents for adults 25 cents for ages 12 to 18. children under 12 and students attend free.
Four convicted prisoners were transported to Huntsville to begin sentences from four years to life. Gene Castillo heads to life after conviction and appeal loss as habitual, with Gary Ingram and Herman Hamilton handling transfers. Leslie McKenzie gets five years for armed robbery, Charles Smith four years for forgery, and Charles C. Mallos robs Western Tire. Mallos and another inmate allegedly cut wrists at a motel. Michael Richard Newbern remains serving an armed robbery sentence.
