Young officer-in-training blends police work and study
Odessa cadet Matt Beasley ages 19 pursues a dual path of on the beat duties with the Odessa Police Department and academic work. He intends to earn an associate degree at UC and a bachelor’s in criminal justice management at UT Permian Basin while remaining in the cadet program. Beasley aims to become police chief or sheriff, saying education plus practical experience will make him a better officer. He notes theory guides him but real work requires adaptation and hands-on learning. By 1980 he plans fulltime police work at 21 and to complete Midland police academy before then.
