Deputies halted two escape attempts at Reeves County Jail as three armed robbery suspects and a habitual offender hid two saw blades to cut a ceiling hole in a tank cell. The blades were recovered before any escape, and inmates were moved to a private cell. Repairs to cover dug holes were underway.

Mrs. Virgie Arrena Mount, 63, died at Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. Services set for 4 p.m. at Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Clark Ford and Rev. Leslie Smith officiating. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Born August 17, 1908, she lived in the Pecos area all her life and worked for Barney Hubbs at the Enterprise as a job printer and bookbinder starting in 1924. She married Clarence Mount on January 5, 1929, in Alpine. Surviving are her husband. two sons, Tommy of Irving and Bobby in the U.S. Army. two brothers, Tommy and Bill Cowan. a sister, Myrtle Cowan. and a grandson.
