Upward trend in Texas feedlot cattle puzzles experts

Austin observes a rapid rise in cattle sent to Texas feedlots with Aug figures showing 1.9 million head on feed, up 21 percent from last year and 2 percent from the prior month. Record July placements of 450,000 head and a 42 percent rise in heifer feedings signal producers push to capitalize on prices while drought limits pasture. Marketings in July reached a record 315,000 head, up 30 percent from 1977, as beef supplies grow and prices temper.

An official of the Houston Independent School District said he hopes the city attorney will declare illegal a proposed property tax reduction for thousands of property owners. Linus Wright, superintendent for program implementation and school management, said the plan will cost the district $8 million in revenue for 1978 1979. The city Tax Board of Appraisement has limited 1978 residential tax reevaluations to no more than 10 percent over 1977 values.
