Former chairman urges governor to name insurance board head
Former State Insurance Board chairman Hugh Yantis urged the governor to appoint the state insurance commissioner rather than the board, arguing the board cannot both set rates and stay closely tied to the agency. He cited a need for separation as he testified to the House General Investigating Committee amid questions about favoritism at the department and a prior case involving Gulf Atlantic Life Insurance and Nationwide Health Insurance Trust.

El Paso Sheriff Removed From Office After Guilty Plea
El Paso County Sheriff Mike Sullivan has been removed from office after pleading guilty to two counts of official misconduct. County Judge T Udell Moore called an emergency meeting of the commissioners court to name a replacement. Sullivan served as sheriff since 1964 and was indicted February 23 on two felony theft counts for using federally paid employees to improve his home. He pleaded guilty May 16 but kept his job under a plea deal. the charges were reduced to misdemeanors. District Attorney Steve Simmons argued state law requires automatic removal for a convicted official, and Judge Walter Loughridge ruled Sullivan has been out since June 21. Sullivan’s attorney said he will appeal.
