Pecos High School sets the Aug 24 class start with a transfer student schedule, locker assignments, and parking rules. Registration for unregistered transfer students should occur in the high school office, which is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
Archaeological buffs in the Pecos area are invited to a Friday screening of films highlighting recent cave finds. The event aims to showcase the ongoing interest in local archaeology and engage the public with interpretive commentary by experts.
Football fans with last year’s reserve seats have until August 13 to reserve the same seat numbers for this year by calling the school business office at 445-5608. Beginning August 16 season tickets will be sold on a first come first served basis. Outside Pecos recent arrangements include a showing of Jack West film strips. West, an attorney, spent years researching and filming archaeological finds in Mexico Central America and South America. the strips depict ancient American engineering and architecture. One showing is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 12th and Ash Streets.

Harrisburg officials said they cannot yet identify the mystery illness linked to an American Legion convention in Philadelphia where 22 people have died and 122 remain hospitalized. Federal and state researchers are mobilized to culture tissue samples and search for clues while noting no confirmed secondary spread.
Police logged a busy day with five accidents across Pecos. At 8:58 a.m. on E Third Street a 1966 Oldsmobile driven by Esmere Gildo Bejaran hit a cinder wall and was cited for defective brakes. At 11:50 a.m. on West 11th Street Rede’s 1979 Ford collided with Bailey’s 1974 Ford. Rede cited for failure to yield. Evening crashes on Ash and East Fourth and Cypress and West Fourth streets left Stella Garcia hospitalized. Royal cited for disobeying a stop sign. Final crash on Cedar Street involved no citations. no injuries.
Violent thunder storms moved through the Texas Panhandle with winds up to 70 mph near Amarillo and widespread rain flooding streets. Pecos logged a high of 10 percent and a 68 degree low. West Texas forecast shows partly cloudy skies and little temperature change through Thursday. Elsewhere, autumn chills lingered from the Ohio Valley to New England while the midcontinent warms and showers spread over the Rockies and Southeast.
